Trails at Bonelli Park

Frank G. Bonelli Regional Park includes about 14 miles of hiking and riding trails that loop through chaparral-covered hills above Puddingstone Reservoir. Trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset, the same hours as the rest of the park. Return to the Bonelli Park homepage for current announcements and park-wide information.

Roughly 1,233 acres of the park remain open space with rolling terrain, canyons, and native coastal sage scrub. Foot paths and shared-use routes connect picnic areas, lake overlooks, and equestrian facilities. The Mounted Assistance Unit patrols many trail miles and can provide first aid to hikers and riders.
Trail Tips Before You Go
  • Download or print the Bonelli Park trail map (PDF) and review your route before leaving the parking lot.
  • Carry water, sun protection, and sturdy shoes. Summer afternoons on exposed ridges can be hot with limited shade.
  • Stay on marked trails and watch for shared equestrian routes. Yield to horses and give riders room to pass.
  • Dogs are welcome on leash. Pack out all trash and respect wildlife in the natural areas.

  • Are the trails paved? Most routes are natural dirt and fire roads with uneven footing. Some sections near developed picnic areas are easier to walk, but expect hills throughout the open-space areas.
  • Can I ride horses on the trails? Yes. Bonelli Park has dedicated equestrian facilities and shared trails. Riders should follow posted equestrian rules and remain alert for hikers and cyclists.
  • Is there a fee to hike? Standard park entrance fees apply when you drive in. Check the park rules PDF on the homepage for current vehicle and walk-in rates.
  • Where do trails start? Trailheads are near developed parking areas around the reservoir. Use the trail map to pick a starting point close to your picnic area, boat launch, or campground.
